Comedy has always been about misunderstandings. If you’ve ever seen/read Twelevth Night or The Comedy of Errors, you know that mistaken identity plots can be as funny as they are interesting. If you’ve seen Frasier, you know that a seemingly private kitchen conversation can complicate social misunderstandings even further, making for more opportunities to laugh. Even saying a word incorrectly will make somebody within earshot laugh. When it comes to comedy, it’s better to be a little confusing than it is to make everything grounded in reality at all times. 

One of my favorite things I’ve ever misunderstood was the lyrics to Pocketful of Sunshine. When I was a kid, I could’ve sworn that the chorus was «Take me away, my secret place, as sweet as gay, take me away.» When I finally learned the truth at age 19, I couldn’t help but laugh.
