‘Dating apps turn us all into HR managers’: Singles bemoan having to ‘reject so many people’ on dating apps

People hate dating apps so much that it has become hack comedy to complain about them. But that won’t stop us. Dating apps feel like the default way to date, in a world where everyone is glued to their phones and so much of our social lives is conducted online. It can feel like if you’re single, you have no choice but to download Hinge, Tinder, or Bumble, and pray to the algorithm gods that they happen to serve you the love of your life. Because what else are you going to do, meet someone in a bar? Nobody approaches anyone anymore, so they say!

But what is it about dating apps that grinds our gears so? Is it the endless swiping, the atomizing of relationships, or do we all just hate having to distill ourselves down to a couple of photos and a quippy line? A Twitter thread recently explored an interesting facet of this love-hate dynamic: rejection.
