Remote employee’s 5-year-old daughter appears on video call during 8:30 PM meeting, HR demands he return to office: ‘Stop working those preposterous hours’

Remote work has been a huge boon to so many working parents. Famously, kids don’t keep the same schedules we do. They get off school before we get off work, and sometimes need to be taken care of during the day. If you’re a parent who keeps regular 9-5 hours, as millions of parents do, then you need some sort of external childcare, even if they’re in school full time. It’s just how our world is set up. But with remote work, if it’s at least a little bit flexible, then you have some more wiggle room.

You still might need someone to look after your kid while you’re working, but you have a little more headspace to take care of them during the day. If they need to be made lunch, you can make them lunch. And understanding employees will usually get it. Being a parent comes before being an employee.
