If you’ve been around me for the past 48 hours, you know I can’t stop listening to and singing songs from the soundtrack to Nashville (1975). The Robert Altman film follows fictional country western stars and those who circulate around them in Nashville, and many of the actors playing the country western singers wrote their own songs. One of the songs in the movie is 200 Years, a celebration of America’s bicentennial and her ability to last 200 years.
«We may have had our ups and downs
Our times of trials and fears
But we must be doin’ somethin’ right
To last 200 years.»
While the song intentionally exaggerates patriotic rhetoric for comedic effect, it’s not absurd to the point of parody. It’s a pretty standard American belief that the existence and persistence of the United States are inherently intertwined with its goodness. While I won’t comment on whether I believe that’s true, these hilarious memes must be doing something right to have gotten to your screen today.
