Role-playing is good for the soul. It’s important to step outside of your own personality every once in a while and try on someone else’s. It will help you realize that your own personality is a construction anyway. It’s just something you put on every day out of convenience. You learn this quickly when you start role-playing as someone else. Maybe in your real life, you’re a little socially awkward and shy. But when you’re playing as Grotan the Barbarian, you’re brutish and brave. It comes easily to you because you’re not yourself, you’re a 400-pound beast.
But what if you channeled Grotan in your everyday life? Say you want to go up to a lady at a bar and ask for her phone number. Maybe in real life, you wouldn’t do that, but Grotan certainly would. He’d go up to her and say, «You pretty. Accompany me to next dragon slaying.»
