Summer break as a kid felt like a magical, three-month-long fever dream. No alarm clocks, endless popsicles, sprinkler parks, and watching The Price Is Right at your grandma’s house while your parents were at work. And while kids are still living their best lives once June hits, let’s not forget the teachers who have been barely hanging on since spring break ended.

By the end of the school year, both students and teachers are 100% checked out. Lesson plans consist of all movies, field day, and talent shows from here on out. My mom’s in her final year of teaching elementary school before retirement, and instead of coasting through these last few weeks with end-of-year portfolio parties and ice cream socials, her class is still doing state testing in late May. She says it’s awful. Everyone’s mentally already on a beach. And if I’m being honest, same. Even though I work in the corporate world and don’t get a summer break, when the weather is warm, I’m clocking out earlier and earlier.
