Kickin’ in the front seat: 15 years of Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’, and it’s more relevant than ever

They called it the worst song the world had ever seen; it proved to be a roadmap for the future of internet culture.

Admittedly, these days it is a lot harder to come by the earnest, unironic cringe that was unleashed when a 13-year-old Rebecca Black hopped out of bed and sang the days of the week for us. Nobody had learned that lesson in 2011, though, and the initial release of Friday became a watershed moment for how we understood the concept of going viral. Once the song found its way to Twitter, it began raking in millions of views and became one of the most disliked videos ever to appear on YouTube. Countless parodies got made, and a dispiriting number of people declared their hatred for a teenage girl whose greatest crime appeared to be looking forward to the weekend with a little too much autotune.
