Aunt books family vacation without telling anyone, niece frets about cancelling for a work trip: ‘Each family unit owes $310’

Planning a vacation requires some serious coordination.

There is a lot to think about when it comes to booking a holiday, which should supposedly help you relax. Things like budget, availability, location, and accommodation take a lot of planning to do right, and even then, it’s not unlikely that you still manage to mess up on one or more of those things. The more people that are involved, the more complicated it gets, because even more opinions have to be taken into consideration.

When it comes to shared vacations, communication can prove difficult—but it is essential nonetheless. When you do not consult anyone else on what works for them, disappointments and disagreements are bound to ensue. Although it can be tempting to make a few executive decisions when trying to coordinate a lot of people, there is a significant downside in that it is pretty likely that at least some of those people will not be on board with what is planned. The reality is that you cannot force everybody to share a vision that they haven’t been involved in, especially when they are paying for the privilege. A vacation that causes stress before it even happens is not as likely to be enjoyable.
