Startup fires founding employee, still expects her to do work for no salary: ‘They kept another employee who makes less than me’

Some companies believe that your paycheck and your responsibilities can end at different times.

When an employee holds an important position at their former employer, it is not uncommon for them to face requests to manage the handover and help out with responsibilities even after their tenure at the company has come to an end. Much as everybody may eventually be replaceable, that doesn’t usually happen overnight.

Whether they choose to retire or get kicked out of their role unexpectedly, those workers who are higher up the food chain frequently find that leaving their job comes with a lot of inconveniences. There is always somebody realizing that they had possession of certain essential documents, or knew how to execute some processes that nobody else understands.

As such, there is every chance that an employee like this will be needed for their services for longer than expected. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but most of the time, it is only fair that they get compensated for it. Just because they do not officially fill a role anymore doesn’t mean that they do not deserve to be paid for their effort. In this case, it is probably even more deserved.
