What is an appropriate gift to give your sibling for their wedding?
When someone you know gets married, the gift you give them becomes a symbol for how close you believe you are to them. If a distant cousin or friend gets married, you will probably pick something off their registry and call it a day. But if a close family member or a best friend ties the knot, you want to give them something that they will truly cherish.
Some parents, for example, will give their kids a car, or even a house, as a wedding present. They spend most of their adult life saving for their kid’s special day, so it’s natural to want to buy them something that will help them start their own adult lives. Siblings usually think along the same lines, too, paying for the happy couple’s honeymoon, or giving them an extravagant check that will surely show their love.
But the thing about wedding gifts is that it’s the gifter’s choice at the end of the day. Aside from the registry, you get to choose what you buy for the happy couple and how much money you are willing to put into the thing that will demonstrate your love for them. No one else should have a say in the matter other than you.
When the brother in the story below, posted on Reddit, started telling everyone in the family that he was getting his sibling’s beach house as a wedding gift, people assumed it was the sibling’s idea. A house is quite a gift to give, so naturally, the sibling must be on board with that decision, must be quite a close relationship between the two.
Well, as it turns out, that is not exactly the case. Apparently, the brother didn’t even ask his sibling about the house, and started telling people in hopes that the sibling would just go with their plan. Like they wouldn’t mind giving them a whole house that they bought with their own money, without even being asked about it first.
Safe to say, the brother was terribly wrong…
