Does she not know that Harry Potter is fiction?

Some kids believe in magic for longer than others. When I was 10 years old, I found out that Santa wasn’t real, and I totally flipped out on my parents about it. I was definitely a little too old to believe in Santa, and I kept going up to my dad and asking him, «All the kids at school say that Santa is fake, but he is real, right?» Eventually, he fessed up, and I could not stop crying. I accused my mom and him of lying to me. I felt so betrayed that the people I trusted most in the world had lied to me for years, but I quickly got over it. After all, it wasn’t like now that Santa was out of the picture, I wasn’t going to get gifts at Christmas anymore!

Some kids are a lot more trusting than others, and the girl in this story is no exception. She believes in magic, but not the Santa magic. She believes in Harry Potter magic. She was devastated when her mom told her that the Hogwarts acceptance letter that her stepdad gave her for her birthday was a fabrication. That would make more sense if she were six, but this girl is 11 years old, so you’d think she’d know that Harry Potter isn’t real at this point. You might think I’m throwing stones from a glass house, but it’s not like parents tell their kids that Harry Potter is real from a young age. They tell them that it’s fiction, no matter how fun it is to believe in. The stepdad in this story was just trying to do something nice for his stepdaughter, and it totally backfired for multiple reasons.
