Office rules that employees learned the hard way: ‘The corporate ladder is a trap’

What is the rulebook that should be standard in every workplace?

While any reputable company will have a code of conduct for its employees, it often doesn’t cover a lot of the things that they really need to know. At some jobs, it feels like you can know every written rule off by heart, and still get tripped up by the behaviors that everybody else seems to have decided are law.

Anyone can tell you that climbing the corporate ladder requires a willingness to play the game, and anybody who doesn’t know that the game exists in the first place is bound to be at a disadvantage. The problem is that there are some parts of it that can only be learned through experience, and maybe a little insider knowledge on the side. This trial and error can leave us vulnerable to being taken advantage of, and even worse, put our jobs at risk. Sometimes even tiny mistakes can have a huge impact on our work. While some may argue that this means that our role was not a good fit for us anyway, it is still nice to have the reassurance that we know what we are doing.
