This concert wasn’t a random night out. A couple had planned it as an anniversary gift to each other, and then friends joined. Sure, the more the merrier! But the change of plans didn’t make the night less meaningful to the couple, since they had been looking forward to it from the beginning…
The original poster’s friend, Amanda, was leaving her baby for the first time to go to the concert. So it makes sense that everything became too much for her. Leaving your child for the first time is not that easy, especially when you are far from home and with an unreliable phone signal. Her reaction was totally understandable. That’s not what we’re discussing here. But she can’t expect her friends to leave the concert they had been looking forward to so much, just because she felt overwhelmed. Okay, she thought she could handle the situation, but then she realized she actually couldn’t. It can happen to anyone. But her friends checked on her multiple times, and in fact, another friend, Jill, left the venue with her. So it’s not that she was stranded, abandoned, or unsafe while everyone ignored her. She had support and a way out.
It was reasonable for the couple to stay. Why would they miss the concert they had been waiting for so long if their friend was safe with Jill? If Amanda expected them to lose the concert because she couldn’t stay there, then that’s a bit selfish of her. Amanda’s distress was valid, of course, but it doesn’t mean that the whole group had to sacrifice the night.
Amanda wasn’t wrong for struggling, and Jill was definitely kind for helping, but the couple isn’t wrong for staying. Sometimes, the compassionate thing is helping someone get home safely. But if another friend offered to do it, then it’s not wrong that you didn’t want to give up your own night too.
