Memes are a great creative medium for pondering.
All of their general silliness masks the fact that they give us an insight into individuals, subcultures, and even societies in a way that few other kinds of cultural artefacts can achieve so efficiently. If a picture can speak a thousand words, a well-constructed meme can give us at least ten times that. hey are, at the end of the day, highly entertaining units of information that are designed to make us think (even if that happens in the dumbest of ways).
Their greatest achievement, though, is that despite all the insight they hold, most of us are not analyzing every single stupid image that crosses our screens. We are just enjoying it in the moment, and only coming back to it if it really resonates. Who knows how we are being influenced by consuming these bite-sized pieces of insight into the human condition and how various different people feel about it.
It is true that we can get more out of memes than just idle distraction if we actually sit with them for a moment, and consider how and why they may have come about. At the same time, it is not required to enjoy the main thing they offer, which is anything from a few moments to a few hours of amusement. Sometimes, the best thing to do is enjoy the humor at face value, and only come back to ponder it some more if the mood strikes you. That way, there is not too much commitment involved.
