Employee leaves office at 5:30 for childcare, remaining coworker complains because he’s afraid of ghosts: ‘He’s a grown man’

How is it best to deal with superstitions in the workplace?

Most workplaces prefer to keep employees’ beliefs and the job as separate as possible, but that isn’t always going to happen. The fact of the matter is that until we all get replaced by AI, the workforce is not a totally emotionless and personality-lacking mass who will never let their feelings show. Things might get personal now and then.

As a colleague, it can be kind of annoying to work with somebody who insists on sharing a belief system that is different from yours. However, so long as they are not crossing any major professional boundaries, this presents itself as yet another challenge of learning to work with people whom you might not spend a lot of time around outside of the workplace context. Up to a point, it is necessary to be respectful and deal with the issue as it arises. It is a rare workplace where everyone is completely aligned with the same opinions and thought processes, and this is just another quirk which may sometimes get annoying, but is a part of working with other people. Seeing eye to eye is not going to happen all of the time.
