Tennis looks like a really elegant sport… until you see the photos they take of the players…

All things tennis-related have this aura of elegance, luxury, and cleanliness. We see everybody wearing white, sitting there with sunglasses and a parasol and sipping champagne while they see the match… Everything looks like it was taken out of a magazine. However, it’s still a sport, and like every sport, it has its ugly side. Players sweat, they get tired, they get injured, just like any other athlete. That’s as far as the elegance goes. 

Tennis players train for years before competing, and they retire while they’re still young. It’s a lifetime of effort dedicated to something they love, but they have to quit by the time they reach 30. Sounds a bit gloomy when you put it like that, but it’s the same with every sport and almost everything worth chasing. 

My dad has always been a tennis fan. He used to play when he was young, and watch every match of his favourite players. With the US Open happening right now, the TV is always on, showcasing the streaming of each one of the matches and its commentary. It’s like the World Cup all over again, but a lot quieter. No one yells. No one screams at the screen. No one insults the players. It’s all so very… civilized. It’s nice to experience it this way, comparing it to the craziness that is soccer. In this sport, people go to see the players, sit in their respective seats, and just applaud when one of them scores a point. It’s the most tranquil and peaceful I have ever seen people at a sports event. And I really like it. I’m convinced that I would enjoy sports so much more if I weren’t so scared of going to see a match in person.
