When we were young kids, our grandparents were our first best friends. Before kindergarten, before school friends, and before we became bitter teenagers wanting to escape from our families, our grandparents were our first partners in crime. They were the ones spoiling us with candies, new toys, ice cream, and basically anything we wanted. They were there when we were sad and tried to convince our parents not to give us a time-out for being naughty. Because the thing about grandparents is that they had already raised their children responsibly. Their job, now that their kids were grown up, was and it will always be, to spoil their grandchildren and enjoy as much time with them as possible. They babysit, they have fun with the kids, and they stay young while chasing a wild child running all around their house.
I remember my childhood and my time with my grandparents vividly and very fondly. Sometimes, they would take my brother and me out on the weekends so our parents had some time to themselves. They would come pick us up from school to take us to lunch with them. Both of my grandmothers were really good seamstresses, and they made clothes for us as gifts; one of them even taught me how to knit, sew, and embroider when I was about 8 years old. I haven’t done any of it in quite a while, but it’s still a memory that I hold close to my heart. My grandad was really inventive, and other than telling jokes that would make the entire family crack up, he was extremely skilled at fixing our toys when we broke them.
Everyone must have their own memories about their grandparents, but if there’s something all of us who had great relationships with them will agree on, it’s that they made our childhoods a happy time.
