How long has it been since you sat down to rewatch one of our favourite childhood classics?
A few days ago, my boyfriend came to my house to hang out, and since we are both excessively imaginative people, with lots of ideas for planning random dates in the spur of the moment, of course we ended up sitting on the couch and trying to choose a movie to watch. We’re so original.
The thing is, we usually take an awfully long time to decide what movie to watch. The choosing takes longer than the actual movie, and we’re stuck there for a good half an hour saying, «Nah, that one is too long,» «I’m not in the mood for something so serious,» «There’s nothing good to watch,» and this could go on forever.
So, what did we do? We ended up watching Shrek for like the millionth time. And guess what, it was great! I swear, that movie never gets old. I can watch it over and over again, and I keep laughing at the same jokes. And, surprisingly, I keep finding new jokes that make me go «huh?» I’m telling you, that movie has too many jokes that are way too complex for a kid’s movie. I have no idea how that got away with it in the writing room, but it shows that they did it right, because if you’re not paying too much attention, they go right over your head, and I absolutely love that! Those are the kinds of movies you can watch after years, and they’re still good. Shrek has aged like fine wine, and I’m totally here for it.
I am a little worried about what the fifth movie will be like, but what I’m sure of is that it won’t be nearly as iconic as the original. I think we were too hard on Shrek the Third when it came out… I think it’s a good moment to give it another go and see how many memes we can get from it.
