Woman provokes outcry after insisting that people shouldn’t display family photos in their homes: ‘I’d rather see something that shows personality’

Since when was it such a bad thing for a house to feel like a home?

Home decor is one of those topics that can bring out the judgmental side in anyone. We all have slightly different ideas of what an enjoyable and comfortable home looks like, as well as wildly varied budgets and willpower to keep up with the maintenance of that. As a result, one person’s house can easily be another person’s nightmare. It is a very personal thing.

If you consider yourself to be an arbiter of taste in the matter of interior design, you probably see decor crimes everywhere. And you know what? When you’re interested in this kind of thing, it is fun to pass judgment on all the things people do to their homes that you consider to be ugly. For example, I am automatically wary of any room where the only lighting option is blindingly white, bright, overhead LEDs. Your living room does not need to be lit like an operating theater!

Still, people are entitled to decorate the places where they live in whatever way best suits them. Just because we don’t like it doesn’t necessarily mean that we get to be the authority on interior decorating. Ultimately, somebody has spent time, effort, and money making that space into something that reflects their preferences and personality, and that is something to respect. So long as they aren’t forcing their taste on the rest of us, there is no need to get too dramatic with it.
