Christmas isn’t just about the gifts.
It has long been observed that the festive period has become more about spending money and consuming as much as possible, but that isn’t the only reason that people observe the Christmas holiday. Even those who are not invested in the spiritual part of it can get behind the messages of spending time with loved ones while spreading kindness and good cheer. It should be good old wholesome fun for everybody who gets involved.
Unfortunately, we have come to realize by now that just because the holidays are supposed to be a positive time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they turn out that way. People get so sidetracked by ongoing arguments and petty drama that they end up ruining what should be a happy memory. It makes this time of year one that many dread for this reason.
Gift-giving has long been an important part of Christmas, but arguably, it is sometimes a little materialistic to cling to it as the most important part of the holiday as an adult. It is still possible to have a good day with family even if there isn’t all that much money to spend on each other. Didn’t A Christmas Carol try to tell us about this? It is almost always nice to receive some presents, but that shouldn’t be what is at the center of festivities. The more important thing is appreciating the effort that has been taken to see each other and enjoy each other’s company.
