Should you have to bend to your neighbors’ aesthetic preferences?

Sometimes neighbors can be pesky. In an ideal world, you build community with your neighbors and get to enjoy it. You can go and ask them for a cup of sugar, and maybe you can water their plants when they’re away. You partake in a beautiful symbiosis by which you both benefit. But not all neighbors are willing and able to do that. Some neighbors want to keep to themselves, or worse, bother you into submission. Maybe they have a certain idea of how the neighborhood should be, and they’re imposing that on you. Maybe they have certain preferences and picadillos that they want you to bend to. At the end of the day, though, you have as much of a right to be there as they do, and you shouldn’t have to change what you’re doing just to please them.

But this is easier said than done. Some neighbors take it upon themselves to be as difficult to deal with as the day is long. They will overreach into oblivion, making their problems yours. And the tough thing is that you can’t ignore them, because they’re right there. They live near you, so they have direct access to you. Nobody wants to feel unwelcome in their own home, and you want to nip any weirdness in the bud. The neighbor in this story, though, did not want to give in on any of their demands.
