16-year-old waits 40 minutes for fast food job interview, faces pushback when she leaves without speaking with the manager: ‘They got annoyed at me’

How long can a hiring manager reasonably keep an interviewee waiting?

No matter what job a person may be applying for, it is important for a company to make a good impression as well as to judge the candidate. If they take too many liberties with the application and hiring process, it may well be the case that interviewees decide against working for them.

Nonetheless, almost every individual who has experienced looking for work has some kind of story about an employer with hiring practices that leave a lot to be desired. They treat people not as potential employees with whom they have to have a decent working relationship, but as inconveniences who are there to be dismissed and exploited. It doesn’t bode well for what the actual role might be like.

In particular, the kinds of jobs that young people tend to do often fail to show job applicants a basic level of respect. They think that just because a role has a high turnover or is not very prestigious, they have the right to treat job seekers in a way that nobody should have to deal with. It doesn’t give somebody who is just starting out on their work journey a very positive impression of having a job.
