20-year-old son accrues $15,000 of credit card debt, dad refuses to help pay it off with his retirement fund: ‘Every time, he swears it’ll be the last time’

A lot of parents say that they are willing to do anything for their kids, but even the most doting of moms and dads can have their limits. While many will agree that it’s understandable for somebody to continue supporting their children as they find their feet in young adulthood, there can be a fine line between help and indulgence.

The reality is that there comes a point in everybody’s life when they have to take more responsibility for their actions and not expect their close family members to take the brunt of it for them. This can prove to be a more difficult lesson for some people than others, not least if their lifestyle and spending habits don’t match up with what they can afford by themselves. Annoying as it can be, the majority of people have to learn to budget if they want to live within their means.
