21 Gen Z Memes Speaking Fluent Internet Slang While Trying to Survive Their 20s

Millennials and Gen Z people don’t realize how much internet slang has entered their vocabulary until they have to explain one of these phrases to someone older than them.

How do you explain what «aura» is to someone who doesn’t know internet language? You either understand it or you don’t. And if you don’t, we can always explain, but we know the impact of the word is not the same when we have to explain it. I love the idea of Gen Z taking their vocabulary into our daily lives. Eventually, they will take it into their professional lives, because they are studying now and are our future professionals. For instance, in a few years we’ll have Gen Z lawyers. Just imagine spending years at law school only to look at a case and conclude that the law simply isn’t lawing. And someone will eventually have to resist the urge to tell a judge, «Your Honor, it’s giving red flag.» Maybe they won’t say it out loud, but they’ll think it.

Being in your 20s involves trying to look like you know what you’re doing while some chaotic event happens every week. The truth is, no one knows what they’re doing, the vibes are questionable, and the conversation skills are missing, which only makes it worse. One day, you’re surviving on three coffees and no sleep. The next, you say too much during a conversation because you didn’t want it to end and realize you’ve lost all your aura to uncontrollable yapping. What are you supposed to do then? Stop talking and make the silence awkward, or continue talking and make everything worse?

Ironically, the internet is supposed to help us escape reality, but now we need reality to escape the internet. We close TikTok after scrolling for too long, but we end up opening it again without even noticing. We post a story, look at it a few times, and delete it minutes later because it no longer represents us. Being chronically online has affected the way we speak and behave in public, but at least it gave us the vocabulary to explain what is happening. And of course, it gave us memes too!
