The Baroque and the Renaissance are not quite the same thing…
Accidental Renaissance or Accidental Baroque is an ongoing trend we’ve been seeing on social media for the past few weeks. The trend is about posting photographs taken in random moments that have a striking resemblance to the composition, lighting, and facial expressions used in paintings during the Renaissance.
Now, people have been using the terms «Accidental Renaissance» and «Accidental Baroque» interchangeably, so that’s why we’re using them both. However, it’s worth mentioning that Baroque and Renaissance are not actually the same thing. Their aesthetics were quite different.
During the Renaissance, artists looked for harmony and precision in their paintings. As a general rule, everything looked tidy, luminous, and realistic, and they used the «sfumato» technique. You know when ancient paintings look a little blurry on all the edges, and you can’t seem to notice where one object ends and the other begins? Well, that’s what it is, but with a fancy name. It kind of gives everything an aura of… delicacy.
The Baroque, on the other hand, is a lot darker. They were not looking for harmony; they were looking for expression. Their emotions, wishes, fears- that’s what the Baroque was about! It’s chaos. And yes, they also used darker colors to express all that. Their main technique was the «chiaroscuro,» that super intense contrast in colors that hit you like a truck. A really dark background with a single spot of light in the middle: we’ve all seen it, and it’s amazing.
Is it really important to know whether we should call it accidental Baroque or Renaissance? No, not really, mostly because the trend includes both! Still, if you know the difference, you can point it out to your friends and look really cool and pretend you know a lot about art history.
The marvel of this trend doesn’t lie in the name we use to describe it; it lies in the fact that we’re learning to see the world under a different light, to look for the beauty amongst chaos, to find art and expression in random places. We don’t have the time to sit for hours and paint a whole fresco, but photography is something most of us can learn, and this trend has proven that it can be just as expressive and beautiful as a painting. Art lives within all of us, and adding a dash of creativity and artistry to our lives gives us an ideal outlet for our emotions and allows our inner self to be free.
