Humor is a gateway to the soul. While not everyone is funny deep down, there are moments in everyone’s life that merit a laugh, a chuckle, a giggle, or a bona fide guffaw. It’s those times in our lives that show the greatest truths in the world, and if you’re lucky, perhaps the meaning of life will be revealed. Or should I say, the ‘meme-ing’ of life? 

Speaking from experience, I’ve found that the most profound relational moments of human existence can be found within relatable memes. 

Hiding in plain sight like the lucky numbers of a fortune cookie’s fortune, memes disclose the most intimately relatable moments for humanity. These universal experiences not only tie us together, but they can bond people—even total strangers—after giving us a communal anecdote to stand on. Stubbing your pinky toe on the coffee table is a universally visceral experience in the same way that we’ve all stained a plastic Tupperware with marinara sauce. It may seem trivial to tie these small moments together, but perhaps there’s a deeper meaning and a sense of communal humanity in every meme that will build bridges of similarity between people of all walks of life, classes, races, and across country borders. 

Like Kendal Jenner ending a violent riot with the likes of a shared Pepsi with the armed guards, perhaps a shared meme can extend a hand of friendship and relatability throughout the whole world. Maybe, just maybe.
