Would you yeet me that dictionary, please?
Oh, the English language. Such a mysterious, ever-changing skill that not all native English speakers possess. I don’t judge them; English is weird. Especially when each generation adds new words and meanings to it. One day you see yourself as an English speaker, and the next, you try to pronounce the word «Colonel» correctly. On that note, if you think new words are strange to decipher, wait until you find out where old words come from. Those words that we carelessly use every single day, unaware of their bizarre origins. Ask Merriam-Webster about the beginnings of «goodbye» if you don’t believe me.
Even dictionaries struggle to untangle the know-how of the English language. So, as an homage to the language we all supposedly speak and understand, here’s a collection of funny memes that prove we really don’t. Truly, the one language that we will always understand is the language of excellent meme comedy.
Take it from me, I’m a writer; I’m supposed to be a pro at this. Yet, every once in a while I find myself double-checking the spelling of words like «professor» and «accommodation», or wondering if I should be using simple past, or past perfect, or past participle in one of my sentences. Also, every now and then, while scrolling through Instagram, I face yet another new slang word I had no clue existed. It is a never-ending learning curve, no doubt. At least, there is always comfort in knowing that most English speakers can relate to most of the memes in this list.
