The only way to get through a long 12-hour shift at the front desk of a Holiday Inn is to laugh at the absurdity of your profession. In fact, that’s the only way most of us can get through our jobs!
I will never forget witnessing a dad screaming at an employee at a hotel near Disney World in Orlando, Florida. I couldn’t tell exactly what had happened to get them to that point, but I felt so much second-hand fear and sadness for the employee. I believed in my heart of hearts that surely, whatever had happened couldn’t have been as bad as this guy was acting. Maybe that was because I had just come off a customer service job where adult male customers were totally willing to scream at teenage girl employees for the most minor of reasons.
I have the utmost respect for hospitality workers who deal with people when they’re most stressed out. Vacations should be a time to decompress, but instead people think about how much money they’re spending on the hotel room every night and cry about how unfair it is that they can’t use the pool after 10 PM. Anyone who is familiar with this kind of hotel guest will understand these hospitality memes.
