One of the most troubling phrases in the English language is «I don’t know, why don’t you decide?» My Brother In Christ, I don’t want to. We decision-averse people have gotten really good at avoiding making choices when we don’t have to. When choosing where to order from, we will defer to the other people in the room. When picking a brand of chips at the store, we will spend 45 minutes mulling it over before picking the ones we picked last time. When deciding on an outfit for the day, we will leave our closet littered with clothes and then just put on an all-black ensemble. We can’t help it, it’s just the way we are.

Indecision usually comes from overthinking. If your brain is naturally inclined to fire on all cylinders no matter what the choice, then it might be hard to make a snap judgment. We prefer to have time to consider all sides.
