It’s so fun to imagine things that don’t exist yet. Remember when you were a kid and you would spend so much of the day daydreaming? You would be bored in class, so you’d crack open the old imagination and see what was in there. You would invent scenarios, complex characters, what-if premises, would you rather questions, alternate universes, and ways to solve problems. This is such a valuable way to spend your time, even if your teachers called you «absent-minded.» You weren’t absent at all. You were just present in a different reality. This is why we love science fiction so much.
Science fiction brings us back to those times when we were kids and imagining scenarios. They play out fantasies of life on other planets, with aliens and monsters and time travel and robots. They bring us back to that space of play, one that we wish we had never left.
