Sometimes when things fail, it feels out of our control. That can be hard if you’re like me and a bit of a control freak. You know this if you’ve ever watched somebody else cook. You realize your instinct to backseat drive wants to override your sense of goodwill and politeness so much. But you try to tap it down because you’re trying to be an agreeable, easy to get along with kind of person. Control can be a hard thing to surrender. Losing control often has bad associations. It means you’ve gone off the rails, too deep to realize what you’re doing. But the opposite can be true, too.
Sometimes you can try to control something so much that it disintegrates in your grasp. You try for something so hard, and you’re trying ends up biting you in the back. But it’s important to celebrate the moments when things do go out of control. Because they can teach us powerful lessons about ourselves in our humanity, plus, they can usually make us laugh.
