Don’t we all love a good juicy piece of gossip every once in a while?
Hey, Upper East Siders, Gossip Girl here, bringing you your daily dose of fun and laughter. And of course, the most important information about our friends’ lives. Doesn’t matter if our inner circle doesn’t have secrets by the dozen locked in the bottom of a drawer. We all love to talk about each other, and pretend that we’re Blair Waldorf when we’re dressing up to go out in the morning. It makes life more fun, even if we don’t have her closet. Fantasising about living in a luxurious apartment in Manhattan is a part of our daily life as middle-class working people. And which one of us has never thought about starting a blog under a secret name to talk about other people’s lives?
This show keeps giving us so much to work with, even after FOURTEEN YEARS since it ended. So many iconic catchphrases, characters, unhinged storylines, and, of course, memes! Each episode still keeps us glued to the television screen even though it feels like a million years ago and the world has changed so much since then. In today’s society, with modern social media, how long do you think that Gossip Girl’s secret identity would have lasted? Not for six seasons, that I can assure you. And all the other secrets? The affairs, the lies, the gambles, the blackmail… Would not have remained hidden for more than two days.
Rewatching this show, the question that pops into my head over and over again is: what about their parents? Because, let’s not forget, all our main characters are not older than seventeen, at least at the beginning. How is it that one of them runs a nightclub? There’s no way that’s legal. And yes, I know Ruffus, Lilly, and Eleanor were around most of the time, but they had no real clue about what their children were doing or how borderline criminal they were. They deceived us all and made us think that we could keep that kind of information from our parents; how naive of us. Of course, I never did. My parents had more work and less patience with my recklessness than a middle school teacher during lunch break. So no, no weird and illegal behaviour for me. It was straight home from school, homework, maybe some extracurricular activities, and then off to sleep.
Sounds a little strict, I know, but my goodness, it helped. I am disciplined, responsible, and a well-adjusted adult now. Er, or at least the most similar thing. At least I don’t have a juvenile record; that helps a lot with any legal paperwork I have to do now. So, while some of us dwell on all the petty crimes we never committed as teenagers, here’s a list of memes to remember our beloved Blair and Serena. See you next time, XOXO, Gossip Girl.
