We’ve never been closer to having robot butlers, and I actually couldn’t be less excited. It’s so annoying. We spend childhood dreaming about the future, and all the ways it is going to improve our lives. Then we wake up one day and hoverboards are real, robot butlers are real, self-driving cars are real, and we’re all annoyed at them. Hoverboards seem too dangerous and disrupt traffic. Robot butlers seem like they might steal our information and smother us in our sleep. And self-driving cars threaten so many jobs, not to mention… also dangerous.
Maybe it’s because we’ve grown up and realized the risks of these sorts of things. Maybe it’s because the dudes and companies behind these things seem more like supervillains than superheroes. Maybe our knees are just tired and we don’t want to fall off a hoverboard. Or maybe I’m the only one who feels this way, and everyone else is gung-ho about future tech.
