It’s called a crush because it can be… crushing. When you like someone it can consume your thoughts 24/7. I remember having a crush on someone in pre-school and being exhilarated at the prospect of sitting caddy-corner to them on our learning rug. My crush career started early. I also learned quickly that crushing can be a lot more fun than actually dating someone. In real life, people are usually kind of boring. In your head, they’re the answer to all your problems and the alpha and omega of existence. That can be pretty hard to live up to. So I’ve committed to holding onto the crush phase for as long as possible, maybe even forever. That’s why celebrity/fictional crushes are important… because it’s very hard for them to let you down. Not impossible, though.
