After all these years, most of us still conceptualize memes as something funny, one of the less rage-inducing ways to entertain ourselves on the internet that we have today. However, they are capable of being so much more than that. They can tell us all about what different parts of society were thinking about at different points in time, help us pinpoint subcultures, and let us watch how various trends filter into the minds of the general public. 

However dumb their general insight might be, what goes on under the surface can prove to be something that is worthy of more than a couple of seconds of thought. It is also possible to enjoy them for what they provide on a more shallow level as well, and that is all up to whoever is looking at them. You do not have to have a thinkpiece about every meme you find here, but it is an option.
