One of the sad realities of memes is that not all of them are funny. A meme doesn’t have to be funny to have value in itself, but it certainly helps with its longevity. Or maybe it hurts it! How many times have you seen an old meme from like 10 years ago, and cringed at the fact that you used to find it funny? Even memes from two to three years ago can feel somewhat dated. That’s because comedy is the art that’s the quickest to age, and the most likely to age poorly. It’s beneficial for culture and for individuals within it that we aren’t laughing at the same jokes we were five years ago. Comedy requires constant innovation, because although some timeless shows and movies will continue to make us laugh for years to come, most of our laughs are one-time experiences.
