Which mutant would you be if you were in the X-Men universe?
All superhero stories fall under one of a few formulas. Usually, they’re either a Batman-type who doesn’t have powers but fights against crime anyway, or they’re a Superman-type who was gifted incredible powers in a manner entirely out of their control. For many people, Batman-esque stories are more relatable than Superman movies, because most of us are humans, not aliens with incredible gifts. If we were aliens, we would probably be ostracized in a way that Superman never really was, because he can blend in well with society.
I find the X-Men mutant origin stories much more true to life and relatable than Superman. So many of us have been labeled as freaks for things that we have no control over, and so have the mutants. Just because we don’t have green skin doesn’t mean we can’t relate to those cast aside by a society that doesn’t understand. In real life, differences are not valorized and praised, and that’s something that the X-Men movies and comics understand incredibly well. Even if you aren’t part of a marginalized group, you have probably gone through something physically or emotionally that made you feel like a monster in your own body. Heck, even the process of going through puberty, something all humans do, is enough to make you feel like a scary mutant who can’t control your body and your mind. X-Men’s relatability is what makes it so popular! If you relate to Sunspot more than Clark Kent, these X-Men memes will make a swell scroll.
