30-year-old moves out of mom’s house and stays in the same city, she demands weekly overnight visits: ‘I want to experience having my own space’

Should adult children have to host their parents whenever they ask for it?

Although parenting may be a job that you never truly retire from, the role of a parent changes massively as children grow older. No capable adult needs to have mom waiting on them hand and foot for their every single need, and most people are naturally going to want more independence from the family unit as they come of age. While it takes some longer to leave the nest than others, it is usually a good thing for their personal development when they do. Even loving parents can be a lot to deal with when you are under the same roof.

At the same time, some parents just can’t accept that there comes a time when they’ll be slightly less involved in the lives of their kids. Whether they miss the company or feel like they have a right to control them, they are vocal about their expectations for constant contact, even if that isn’t what their children want. Ultimately, they have to find other ways to quell their insecurities. It isn’t fair to stunt somebody’s growth just because you feel you should be around them all the time.
