40-year-old refuses to wear same bridesmaid’s dress as rest of the group, jeopardizes friendship with the bride: ‘I look much older than all of them’

There are only a few situations in life where you’re forced to wear something you didn’t pick out: when you’re a kid, when your job requires a uniform, and when you’re a bridesmaid. That’s usually the whole sitch of the gig– you wear a dress that you probably think is ugly, spend too much money on the bachelorette party, and seem like a really good friend. But wearing something that you don’t want to can be a pretty terrible experience. It can bring out a lot of insecurities about your body, and you generally don’t get to feel like yourself. But that’s the nature of being in someone’s wedding. It’s one of the weird little traditions in our culture that has somehow stuck around through generations.
