Where do laughs come from? Our throats, sure, but how does that work? And no I don’t need any «Well, actually» types coming along and stomping out all the fun. Let me wonder in a poetic sense, won’t you? If you’ve ever tried to force a laugh, you know how hard it can be. Many times, I’ve been in the audience for a comedy show where I was seated a little too close to the stage and thus forced to maintain a constant stream of laughs whether I felt like it or not. No, the comedians weren’t asking me to do that, but there is a social contract that comes with sitting in spitting distance of a performer trying their best.
