Entitled New York restaurant staff refuse to let customers cut homemade birthday cake, serve them tiny slices then claim there is none left: ‘It took 5 or 6 hours of my time and I would value it at several hundred dollars’

Baking is a seriously impressive hobby. While anybody can throw some package mix together and call it a day, it takes real patience and skill to make and decorate a great cake. There’s a good reason those artisanal bakers charge so much.

As a result, it’s a real privilege to have a friend who knows how to bake and wants to share that with you. This was the position of one TikToker and amateur baker who had an unpleasant experience at a restaurant recently after bringing along a painstakingly constructed cake for his friend’s birthday meal. The staff would not allow the table to cut the cake themselves, instead sending them tiny slices from the kitchen—then claiming that there were no leftovers for them to take home.

When this predicament was taken to social media, people were immediately suspicious that the restaurant had not been honest or upfront about the cake’s whereabouts. While management eventually apologized, it’s fair to say that many still felt that something fishy had gone on.
