Gossip is a very effective mode of communication. If we didn’t have gossip, I wouldn’t know half of the information I know. I feel like the word «gossip» carries a lot of negativity around it even though it doesn’t have to. Sure, it’s not very nice to talk behind someone’s back, but if we didn’t, how would we know the social landscape we’re navigating? How would we know who to trust and who to not trust? We must take everything we hear with a grain of salt, but sometimes there’s truth behind it that we shouldn’t ignore.
In a certain way, memes could be inherently viewed as gossip. They’re passed down from internet user to internet user, and it’s often hard to trace where they originated from. They’re shared between friend groups as a way to re-ify their friendship. And if you know you know, and if you don’t you don’t. Memes are kind of the ultimate form of internet gossip.
