Remote Learning Won’t End the Traditional Snow Day if Parents Don’t Let it

Six short years ago, it seemed like the entire world learned how to work, learn, and play from the comfort of their homes. It took a little bit of adjustment at first. Most of us had never even heard of Zoom after a decade of Skype dominating the conversation. But even with the technical hiccups of picking up a new technology en masse, school children and office workers alike were able to do their work from their couches. When this learning style was implemented, it seemed like one thing was destined for extinction: the traditional snow day.

We all remember the childhood thrill of waiting around the landline or watching the news, hoping and praying that our school would be closed after a major snowstorm. Now, it seems like kids might never know the carefree fun of a snow day ever again, especially since New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared that NYC public school students would either go in person or have a virtual learning day on Monday after today’s snowstorm.
