A regular customer turns every sushi order into a full-blown interrogation, circling through every possible roll and ingredient combo before finally settling on the original choice, just as she always does.
Servers get all kinds of questions, but this is something else. The menu becomes a battlefield of hypotheticals, each roll dissected and compared, every ingredient weighed and questioned. The customer doesn’t just want to know what’s in the crunch roll. She wants to know what it would be without the shrimp, what it would be if you swapped the fish, and what it would be if you removed the crunch. The answers never change, but the questions keep coming, each one a fresh round in the never-ending game of menu roulette.
What always strikes me about these stories is it always sound like these people are sort of modern Mowglis, they act in ways that make me think the only possible explanation for their behavior is that they were raised by wolves in the jungle because, how can you spend a lifetime in civilized society and think haggling about ingredients and prices in a sushi restaurant is acceptable behavior?
