It is Cinco de Mayo today, a Mexican holiday commonly mistaken as their Independence Day (which is actually September 16th). This holiday is actually in remembrance of the 1862 Battle of Puebla. This battle was an insane win for Mexico back then, because the French were trying to do their thing and colonize, and they sorely lost at this battle. It was the wildest W for Mexico and L for France, because it was a huge, well-armed French force against a small, ill-equipped Mexican force. Even with the odds against them, Mexico still won! The war would go on for several years, the French army led by none other than Napoleon III, but that battle was never forgotten and always considered a huge victory. So if you must attend Taco Tuesday today, at least go to celebrate this incredible historical event that gave hope to the Mexican people back in 1862.
