High performing employee flattens team morale, manager struggles to address it: ‘They’re creating tension’

Results usually come first in the workplace, but the process towards them is also important.

It goes without saying that most companies will be patting themselves on the back when they hire an employee who exceeds all of their targets and always gives them something good to say in their quarterly review. However, how they work as an individual only represents one part of the puzzle. Most workplaces consist of more than one person, and as a result, being able to work well with others is a desirable trait in almost all new hires. They can get into trouble without it.

The reality is, just because a colleague doesn’t get the same results does not mean that they deserve to be disrespected and talked over by somebody who has flashier credentials. If anything, it will discourage them from trying to improve their performance. There needs to be a balance between support and achievement. While that is primarily the responsibility of management, it is necessary for all coworkers to try to foster this environment where they can. Being a good person to work with does not have to get in the way of professional success.
