Employee makes a blunder on an Excel file, coworkers ice him out and talk behind his back: ‘I hate corporate culture, it’s full of vultures’

If you make a mistake at work, should you be given grace?

Everyone makes mistakes. Everyone has those days, as Hannah Montana once told us. But when those mistakes happen, it can teach us a lot about the people we work with. Usually, coworkers and higher-ups will have some sort of sense of proportionality when it comes to mistakes. If you make a minor mistake, then it can simply be a teachable moment and easy to move on from. If it’s a high-level mistake, then it should be investigated and taken seriously. But nowhere in that process should you be disrespected. It’s easy to correct someone without making them feel bad about it. You can be an effective leader and still be kind. The boss in this story didn’t take that approach, however, and left their employee feeling like the world had turned against them.
