What’s in a name?

Names are important to the way we see ourselves and the way others see us. It’s often the first thing people know about us. We’re living in a day and age when it’s perfectly acceptable to have a preferred name that’s different from your legal name. There are a lot of different reasons to use a different name, and you don’t have to sit around explaining yourself to everyone who comes along. We should all know enough just to use the name that we’re given and accept it as that. It’s the right way to respect someone and their wishes about how to be known. That is sometimes easier said than done, though, and the coworker in this story was having a hard time with that for an odd reason. Sometimes we get thrown off by the little things, and that’s what was seemingly going on here.
