How much can you overlook before being a good neighbor turns into letting someone walk all over you?
Living in a building brings a different type of neighbor problems. Instead of fences and driveways, people fight over noise, thin walls, and, somehow, dirt on the balcony. There’s always room for some discussion when having to share a common living space, because people have different upbringings, and they don’t always understand the same things when it comes to living in peace.
I live in a building for the first time in my life, and let me just say, it’s all an experience. Even though I can find certain advantages, I’m not really the biggest fan of apartments: I’ll always prefer to live in a house. I think it’s more private and more spacious. Anyway… I can already tell, from experience, the majority of problems that people have to face when living in a building.
Even though I’ve never came across food scraps and medical waste from a neighbor in my balcony, I do had to deal with noises, crazy loud laughs, vacums at 6 in the morning, door smashing, etc. It feels like I’m sharing an apartment with the whole building. It’s very uncomfortable when a good night of sleep seems to be interrupted by other noises. It’s the worst.
This couple shared the very uncomfortable situation they are having with their upstairs neighbor. She’s not only an old lady who seems to have the legs of an elephant, with the thuds she makes, but she also seems dirty and disrespectful. They decided to cope with the noises until food scraps and used band-aids were found on their balcony. They reached their limit and decided not to accept that.
They talked to management and, as always, there’s nothing much they can do. They suggested they should confront the neighbor themselves, but since that’s not common, they have their hands tied. Let’s dive into this experience, and let us know in the comments what you think about this, and what you would do in a situation like this.
