All I want for Christmas this year is the Harry Potter HBO show, and it looks like I am going to get it! Let’s just hope that it is actually as good as it has been hyped up to be.
Everyone who has been so excited about the new Harry Potter HBO show has emphasized that it’s bound to be more book-accurate than the movies, but I’m not totally sure that that is true. The first two movies are about as book-accurate as any film adaptation I have ever seen. I think it would’ve been a detriment if they were more accurate, with the exception of including Peeves the Poltergeist. I assume that they couldn’t make an accurate-enough or scary (but not too scary for the kids) enough, but other than that, the first two movies include everything you need in a Harry Potter adaptation.
I’m really curious what they’re going to add for the new show, because apparently, they aren’t getting to the Sorting Hat scene until the 3rd episode. That would make sense if the episodes were 20 minutes long, but the episodes are apparently around 75 minutes each! I guess we’re going to have a full feature-lengthen film about Harry’s life at the Dursleys? Maybe there will be an extended scene about the time he accidentally flew onto the roof at his muggle school? Honestly, that could be a funny scene, if they are going to dedicate a great deal of time to setting up Harry’s pre-Hogwarts life.
I know at least one thing won’t be book accurate: Harry will not have green eyes, and I’m unsure if he ever will in an onscreen adaptation of Harry Potter. All I can hope is that the actress playing young Lily actually has the same eye color as the actor playing Harry. That’s one of the screw-ups in the movies that I will never get over. The little girl playing Lily had dark brown eyes! How did they mess up so badly!
